Jersey Pottery Earthenware Coffee Mugs – Set of 4

$69.00

This matching set of four Jersey Pottery earthenware coffee mugs showcases the craftsmanship that made the iconic Channel Islands pottery famous. Each hand-finished mug features a distinctive geometric band around the base, giving the set an earthy, bohemian-inspired charm.

Founded in 1946, Jersey Pottery was established by brothers Charles and William Potter in Gorey Village on the island of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands—a British Crown Dependency in the English Channel, just off the coast of Normandy, France.

Decorative pottery production had been banned in mainland Britain during the Second World War to conserve vital raw materials, redirect labour to the war effort and maximise factory efficiency. Because these restrictions did not apply in Jersey, the brothers recognised a rare opportunity to establish a British pottery on the island, laying the foundations for what would become one of the Channel Islands' most celebrated ceramics brands.

Production was gradually moved to England during the 2000s before manufacturing at the original Gorey pottery ceased. After years of increasing overseas competition, the pottery finally closed in 2020 following the challenges of the pandemic. While ceramic production has ended, the company's restaurants, first established at the pottery site during the 1960s, continue to thrive on Jersey today.

Matching sets have become increasingly difficult to find since production ceased, making this a wonderful addition for collectors of British studio pottery or anyone who appreciates unique ceramics with a story to tell.
