Vintage Cooke & Dutoit Stoneware Vase

$43.00

An endearing example of Australian studio pottery, this vintage stoneware vase features a softly speckled glaze, chocolate-brown rims and base, and hand-painted decoration in deep blue and earthy ochre. Its distinctive waisted silhouette gives it an elegant shape, while the organic brushwork adds handmade character.

The vase bears the impressed COOKE & DUTOIT BADGERS CREEK backstamp, identifying it as a piece from the pottery established by Australian ceramicist Malcolm Cooke and his partner Cheryl Dutoit in Victoria. Cooke trained in ceramics at the Bendigo Institute of Technology, graduating in 1970, before working at Bendigo Pottery and in Clunes.

The pair established their own pottery at Badger Creek in 1974, a rural and urban settlement 6km south of Healesville, producing handcrafted ceramics during an important period in the development of Australia's studio pottery movement.

In 1979, they moved to Tharwa in the ACT, where Cooke continued his ceramic practice at the Cuppacumbalong Craft Centre.

Based on the maker's history and "Badgers Creek" backstamp, this vase most likely dates to the mid-to-late 1970s.

A distinctive piece of Australian ceramic history, with the warmth and individuality that make vintage studio pottery so appealing.
